Historic train on the Transiberiana d'Italia
Carriages from the 1930s on the Sulmona–Isernia railway, climbing to almost 1,270 metres at Rivisondoli-Pescocostanzo station.
The Sulmona–Isernia railway is nicknamed the Transiberiana d'Italia, the "Italian Trans-Siberian", for the landscapes it crosses: snowy plateaus, woods and mountain villages. On some dates of the year, the historic trains of the Fondazione FS run on its tracks.
The journey
You board vintage carriages from the 1930s, the "Centoporte" and "Corbellini", with wooden benches and the classic green and brown livery. From Sulmona the train climbs towards Rivisondoli-Pescocostanzo station, at almost 1,270 metres, passes through Roccaraso and descends to Castel di Sangro. Along the way there are stops in the villages, sometimes with guided tours and local food tastings. On some occasions a steam locomotive pulls the train.
How to take part
The trains don't run every day: there are scheduled dates, mainly between spring and autumn and over the festive season. Programme, times and bookings are on the official website of La Transiberiana d'Italia and on the Fondazione FS website.
If one of the dates falls during your stay, Rivisondoli-Pescocostanzo and Roccaraso stations are a few minutes from our homes.
