Trails and nature
Hikes, snowshoe walks and strolls through woods and high plateaus.
Alto Sangro lies between the Majella National Park and the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park, around the Altopiano delle Cinquemiglia plateau. Hiking season runs from spring to autumn; in winter the same places become destinations for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.
Three outings we recommend
- Bosco di Sant'Antonio (easy): a loop of about 2.8 km among monumental beeches up to a small medieval hermitage. Under an hour, perfect with children, with meadows and picnic tables.
- Monte Calvario (moderate): you start on foot from Rivisondoli and reach the top in half a day, with the whole plateau below you.
- Monte Rotella (demanding): over 2,100 metres, facing the Majella. A full day, from the Bosco di Sant'Antonio along trail T4.
Before you go
Download the GPS track, check the weather (at altitude it changes quickly, even in summer) and bring water and hiking boots. In the parks, stay on the trails and keep dogs on a lead.
